If the chrysalis is knocking…

I can hear birds singing, cars in a distance and I can smell morning. Morning has a smell similar to rain but it’s more subtle. It’s not over powering. It’s the perfect blend of flowers, sunshine and anticipation. I don’t know what it is about Spring mornings that makes me excited to create and explore. Autumn and Winter mornings makes me want to do my best impersonation of a bear hibernating. I crawl under my thick duvet and hope that I can eek out a few more minutes of sleep, no matter how long I’ve already been in bed.

Spring mornings encourage me to get up early and catch the sunrise.

This Spring morning I am in bed with my two youngest. We’ve woken up early and we’re sharing kisses and hugs while our bodies are still radiating warmth from sleep. David is asking me to clean the gunk out of his eyes and Laurelyn is trying to wake up by nursing again and again and again.

David is so cute. Yesterday we moved our chrysalis’s into an old fish tank so they could be watched while the butterflies are forming. David became the soldier at watch, with weapon at the ready of course. He was responsible for letting anyone know if they were too close to the edge of the tank.

It makes me wonder what it’s like to be in a chrysalis. Do the butterflies hear all of our familial noise? Are we too loud for the budding butterflies? This, of course, brings up the question of whether butterflies have ears. I think we’ll discover that during school today.

I wonder what it would be like if I didn’t have ears. No more listening to the warring sides of an argument. No more whining. No more listening to the same line of the same song a million times.

Then I hear the birds singing their Spring morning song again and I realize that although it means listening to the occasional argument and certainly a song being sung repeatedly by a child using the wrong words, it is a blessing to wake up to the birds singing.
